Bern – The cities of Zug, Zurich, Winterthur and St.Gallen have teamed up with SBB, Swisscom and Swiss Post to form the association Smart City Hub Switzerland. Its aim is to promote the development of smart cities in Switzerland.

More and more data is being collected in public spaces by cities, companies or other actors. Such data includes street names or parking space occupancy, as well as private data such as individual water consumption. If the data is used correctly, cities can be managed more effectively and resources used in a more targeted manner.

The new association Smart City Hub Switzerland now wants to ensure that this data is better used in Switzerland. To this end, actors from different sectors will collaborate more closely.

Smart City Hub Switzerland was founded at the end of August by the cities of Zug, Zurich, Winterthur and St.Gallen, as well as the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), telecommunications provider Swisscom and Swiss Post.

The Canton of Basel-Stadt, the municipality of Ittigen in the canton of Bern, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the platform Smart Cities & Regions have become the first members to Smart City Hub Switzerland. The association plans to grow further in the coming months, with citites in the French-speaking part of Switzerland and the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino having already indicated their interesting in joining.

The president of the association is Christian Geiger, Chief Digital Officer (CDO) at the city of St.Gallen. The association is headquartered in the Swiss capital Bern.
