Barcelona – Singapore has been named Smart City of 2018 at the Smart City Expo World Congress for its Smart Nation project, which seeks to transform the Asian city-state into a global benchmark of smart urban solutions.

Singapore’s Smart Nation project consists of a wide array of solutions developed by the government: dynamic public bus routing algorithms, real-time parent-teacher portals and even predictive analytics for water pipe solutions.

The Asian city-state has now been recognized for its efforts to use innovative and transformative digital technologies to improve people’s lives at the Smart City Expo World Congress, which was held in Barcelona 13–15 November. Singapore was named Smart City of 2018 by a jury made up of representatives from Barcelona City Council, the UITP International Association of Public Transport, UN-Habitat, the World Bank and Smart City Expo World Congress.

“Singapore has undoubtedly become a global beacon of the urban transformation,” said the jury. Smart Nation “not only enhances the city’s functioning but also improves the services provided to its citizens and through them their quality of life”.

Awards were handed out in a total of seven different categories at the Smart City Expo World Congress. Other winners include the {delft}LINK initiative to address housing shortage in Cape Town; the ICT deployment programme from the city of Gaoqing; the e-health living lab developed by the Hague; North Avenue Smart Corridor's multi-modal traffic management system in the US state of Georgia;  Mshereib Properties' project transforming downtown Doha into a more welcoming, citizen-empowering environment; and Shanghai's Jinshan District Government for constructing smart buildings.
