Zurich – Levels of heat vary locally across cities and regions. The canton of Zurich is now using an online map to show which local streets and roads suffer from heat stress and when.

Heat can affect how people behave, according to a statement from the canton of Zurich. On roads and streets, it causes higher levels of pollution, which in turn creates health risks. This is why the canton has unveiled a GIS (Geographic Information System) browser map that depicts local heat stress. The map is designed to support and inform planning processes.

Planners can use the map to find out about heat stress in particular areas, such as where roads are planned. They will be sent information based on heat stress in the area at 2pm on a summer’s day. This information can then be incorporated into the planning procedures, alongside supplementary information about green spaces, working areas or pedestrian zone potential that is included in the map.

The canton’s Civil Engineering Office is also working on guidelines for heat reduction during road-building projects. This will be available by summer 2021 and included in the map.
