Shanghai – The Chinese city Shanghai has released an index to gauge the sustainable development standard for global cities. It was unveiled on World Cities Day 2021 and originated from the people-oriented urban development concept raised by President Xi Jinping.

World Cities Day took place on 31 October 2021. During the opening ceremony on the North Bund waterfront, Shanghai unveiled the “Shanghai Index”. Designed to gauge the sustainable development standard for global cities, the index was jointly designed with UN Habitat to evaluate and reflect the achievements and challenges facing global cities on sustainable development. It can also help cities to adjust their development focus, according to an article in the Chinese newspaper Shine.

The Shanghai Index originated from the people-oriented urban development concept raised by President Xi Jinping, writes the article. It covers factors such as education, transport, infrastructure, employment, social security, emissions, public space and emergency response. President Xi Jinping has previously said that urban planning and development must be committed to a people-centered approach, according the article.

World Cities Day launched in Shanghai in 2014 to highlight the theme of the World Expo 2010 – Better City, Better Life – which was also held in Shanghai.
