Zurich – The quality of living in Zurich is the second highest in the world, a survey from consulting firm Mercer has found. With Basel and Geneva, two other Swiss cities have also made it into the top ten.

Quality of living in Zurich has once again been rated second-best in the world by expats. According to a survey conducted by consulting firm Mercer, only Vienna is a better place to live. Sharing third place are Auckland, Munich and Vancouver. With Geneva (number nine) and Basel (number ten), two further Swiss cities have made the top ten for the ranking. Bern comes in at number 14.

“Zurich scored well for having a high number of international schools, a reliable and safe transport infrastructure and an outstanding standard of medical care,” Mercer expert Narcisa Chelaru said in an article by the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper. She also highlighted the varied cultural activities and good housing on offer.

This year, Mercer for the first time also analyzed personal safety in the respective cities. In this area, Luxembourg was crowned the safest in the world, while Helsinki, Basel, Bern and Zurich all share second place.

Each year, Mercer evaluates living conditions in more than 450 cities worldwide on the basis of 39 criteria, which include health, education, transport infrastructure and other public services. The city ranking compiled by Mercer helps support multinational corporations in objective comparisons of different locations.
