Zurich – Real estate developer Halter AG has developed a unique residential concept. The first apartments, which are now ready for occupancy in Adliswil in the canton of Zurich, can be adapted at the touch of a button.

The MOVEment concept grew out of the realization that the demand for small apartments and one-person households will continue to grow due to rising life expectancy, longer studies and other reasons. Working with an idea from Austrian architect Angelo Roventa, Halter AG developed the MOVEment concept over a period of two years to market maturity.

The micro-apartments consist of just one room between 23 and 40 square metres. Despite its small size, the room has various modules that can be adapted to the resident’s needs at the touch of a button.

“Within a few seconds, space is created for working, sleeping, cooking, watching TV or even practicing yoga on the floor,” according to a press release. The bathroom is located in an additional, separate room.

The first micro-apartments are now ready for occupancy: forty-one units will be inaugurated in Adliswil, just south of Zurich, in autumn. A further 35 micro-apartments will follow in Basel by autumn 2021.

Halter AG’s goal is to build up to 300 micro-apartments per year in the future, and a total of 7,500 new micro-apartments could enter the housing market by 2045.
