The Smart City Expo World Congress, a leading international event on cities and smart urban solutions being held in Barcelona from November 19-21, has announced the winners of its World Smart City Awards 2019.
The prestigious City Award, which is awarded to cities that have developed global strategies combining projects, initiatives and policy implementations for their citizens, was awarded to Stockholm for its smart city strategy that focuses on innovation, openness and connectivity.
Awards were handed out in six other categories. FCC Environment in Barcelona, a modular e-mobility lorry platform for urban services, won the Innovative Idea Award. The government of Yingtan in China won the Digital Transformation Award for piloting the world’s first 5G-powered digital twin city. The winner of the Urban Environment Award is the US company Hexagon, which developed a satellite monitoring system for the predictive maintenance of utilities, such as sewer networks. The City of La Paz won the Mobility Award for its urban cable car system, the largest in the world. The Governance and Finance Award went to Los Angeles Data Science Federation, a collaborative research partnership between the City of Los Angeles and 18 Los Angeles area colleges and universities. Finally, the winner of the Inclusive and Sharing Cities Award is the government of Buenos Aires for Barrio 31, a project that addresses informal settlements with the aim of integrating the neighbourhood into the formal city.
This year’s World Smart City Awards were the biggest to date, with 450 entries from 54 countries worldwide.
