There are plans to build a “parkipelago” of floating islands in the heart of Copenhagen. Dubbed Copenhagen Islands, the non-profit initiative follows the success of CPH-Ø1, the first prototype island that launched in 2018, according to an article on Inhabitat.com.
The mobile concept was designed as a way to revitalise the forgotten parts of the city’s old harbour while introducing green space for the benefit of local residents, fauna and flora. All the islands will be constructed by hand using traditional techniques and will grow endemic plants, trees and grasses to provide a habitat for birds and insects.
Free to access, the islands will offer swim zones, floating saunas, gardens and a sail-in café. They can be moved seasonally between underutilized and newly developed parts of the harbour to help catalyze urban growth, writes the article. In winter, the islands can be joined together to create a “super continent” for special events or festivals.
“The project hints at a new type of climate resilient urbanism, inherently flexible in its use and only using sustainably sourced and recycled materials,” said Australian architect Marshall Blecher, who designed the islands in partnership with Danish design studio Fokstrot. Copenhagen Islands has already received the Taipei International Design Awards for Public Space and the award for Social Design.
