Ittigen BE – The federal government is providing authorities and companies with a new planning instrument for space and mobility, which can calculate the future transport behavior of the Swiss population. This takes into account job development, for example.

The Swiss Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) is providing a new national passenger model. This aims to help authorities, transport companies, and other players to predict the future mobility behavior of the population.

According to a press release, the model maps the Swiss transport system with 2017 as the base year. For this it takes account car, public, bicycle, and pedestrian modes of transport. Using assumptions on job development or income, the system is able to calculate how the population’s mobility behavior will evolve. For example, it can also analyze how population aging, changes to residential areas or adaptations to the road network and public transport timetables affect mobility behavior.
