Handan – French architecture firm Dominique Perrault Architecture has won an international urban design competition to transform and revitalize Handan’s industrial heritage.

According to ArchDaily, the competition seeks to develop master plans for the Hangang district in the city of Handan, China. Its aim is to “speed up the transformation progress and upgrade the entire steel industry, deal with the traffic problems, environmental pollution and settle other infrastructure issues”.

Dominique Perrault Architecture was named the winner after several evaluation rounds that focused on aspects such as the district’s historical and industrial heritage, public spaces and ecological balance. The jury also looked at the likelihood that the plans could be realized in the near future.

French architecture firm’s “The City of Tomorrow” project envisions a Green Handan Manifesto, which consists of four main areas of focus: water, green production, heritage preservation and what the team calls Hotel Metropole, a usage and economic concept developed by Dominique Perrault that takes into consideration how city life around the world changes.

Second prize was shared by Wang Jianguo and Zhuang Weimin. In total, six globally renowned architecture firms were invited to participate in the competition, including Coop Himmelb(l)au and UN Studio.
