Shanghai – The process of decontaminating the soil in the former industrial district of Taopu in Shanghai is just over 70 percent complete. At the same time, initial building works aimed at establishing a Smart City on this site are now underway.

Taopu is one of the oldest industrial districts in the city of Shanghai. Built during the 1950s, Taopu was a hub for the chemicals industry. For this reason, extensive decontamination work is needed before Taopu can be transformed into a Smart City location. And Shanghai is now getting ever closer to realizing this ambition, as detailed in an article on Shine, the online platform of the English-language newspaper Shanghai Daily. The article explains that soil remediation work in Taopu is now 74 percent complete, while progress in relation to groundwater treatment now stands at 60 percent. Moreover, construction work on the first new buildings has already begun in parallel to these clean-up operations.

In the Smart City, office space covering more than two 2 square kilometers is being built, with 1.1 square kilometers and 760,000 square meters of this area respectively earmarked for top quality apartment complexes and scientific research institutes. The plan is for three industries to move into the remodeled Taopu: Smart technologies, smart research and healthcare

In addition, generous parklands will be integral to the plans for Taopu. These will also serve to raise awareness of current sustainability aspects. In total, 57 hectares of land are being set aside to create the Taopu Green Space.
