Zurich – The canton of Zurich has launched a new website as part of its plans to tackle overheating in residential areas. The website “Hitze im Siedlungsraum” (Heat in Residential Areas) analyses the climatic situation for any given area and suggests further development.

The canton of Zurich wants to reduce the heat load in its regional areas. To this end, it has launched a new website called “Heat in Residential Areas”, the cantonal administration writes in a statement. The site offers an interactive tool that can be used to analyze the current climate situation for any given area. In addition, it provides recommendations and concrete measures against overheating for possible further developments of any selected area.

On the new website, there are examples of climate-adapted residential development. It shows 18 possible measures that can be used to improve the climatic situation in urban development, buildings and open spaces.

The canton also provides a digital application to examine and visualise measurement data on air temperature from around 50 locations in the canton, explains the cantonal administration. The application is based on a measurement network that has been operated by the Cantonal Office for Waste, Water, Energy and Air for the past two years. The digital tool is intended to contribute to a better analysis of heat waves and the effect of urban planning measures to reduce heat.
