Manila – The Philippine Government has pledged to complete six smart city projects despite setbacks caused by the pandemic. During a recent meeting, the government highlighted projects including a rapid transit system, a digital traffic system and a command centre to improve emergency responses.

As the Philippines strives to create more eco-friendly smart cities with improved quality of life for inhabitants, the Philippine government has recently pledged to complete six smart city projects. According to an article from OpenGov Asia, during the 4th ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) Annual Meeting, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) said participating local government units were committed to pursuing smart city initiatives.

During the meeting, the DILG highlighted smart city projects such as e-government services in the City of Manila; Cebu City’s bus rapid transit system and digital traffic system, and Davao City’s intelligent transportation and traffic systems.

According to the DILG, smart cities have realised that forging partnerships are necessary to overcome challenges and to move forward. To this end, the Philippine Government is seeking the ASCN’s support for the completion of the smart city projects that need digital infrastructure and applications. Given the country’s location, the design of these projects is centred on the need for an efficient emergency and crisis response centre that provides real-time information for safety, constituency protection and increased resilience.
