Brussels - The European Urban Initiative has launched a 50-million-euro call to support urban innovation and cities’ capabilities to build sustainable development. It translates the green values of the New European Bauhaus initiative into practice.

The European Commission’s European Urban Initiative (EUI), which is part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), has announced a call of 50 million euros to support urban innovation, announced a statement. It is based on the core values of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative – aesthetics, sustainability and inclusion – and will allow a second generation of projects to be implemented after the first six were financed under Horizon Europe earlier this year.

The EUI is looking for projects that trigger urban transformation and have the potential to generate investments and inspire other projects in line with the principles of NEB. They must be related to one of four themes: circularity and carbon neutrality; preserving and transforming cultural heritage; adapting and transforming buildings for affordable housing solutions; and regenerating urban spaces.

“Innovative projects on the ground translating the New European Bauhaus values into reality is crucial for an inclusive green transition that provides high-quality living solutions to all,” commented Commissioner for Cohesion Policy and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, in the statement.

The ERDF will finance 80 per cent of the cost of selected projects, with each project eligible to receive up to five million euros. Part of the funding will support the transfer of innovative solutions to other cities in Europe. The call is open until mid-January 2023.
