New Delhi – The smart water specialist Sensus has announced plans to support a transition to improved water solutions in India. Smart water solutions can help reduce the amount of water that is wasted before reaching consumers.

India is not a water-scarce country, writes Sensus in a statement. However, more than 40% of the water produced in many cities is wasted before reaching the final consumer due to leaks or theft. This is known as non-revenue water (NRW), and India's average is above the global average range of 30% to 35%, according to the World Bank.

In its whitepaper 'Smart Cities need Smart Water', Sensus emphasises the need for smart, real-time monitoring to strengthen control over water usage. According to the statement, Sensus, which is owned by Xylem, is in talks with municipal corporations and utilities of leading states across India, to help them with smart water meters and other technology deployments to reduce water loss.

Nitin Bhate, Managing Director of Xylem India, said in the statement: "With our metrology brand Sensus, we are providing cutting-edge technology for utilities to be able to accurately measure water consumption, and ensure early-stage leak detection to enable utilities to save significant costs and derive better ROI."

Sensus started its India metering operations in 2014 and offers expertise in Smart Metering, Data Analytics, Smart Water Networks, Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).
