York - The UK’s National Railway Museum is set to host a two-year exhibition looking at the future of mobility. It will showcase innovation in autonomous technology, decarbonisation, smart cities and communities.

The National Railway Museum’s 'Innovation Platform' exhibition opens on 15 June and will run until summer 2024, announced a statement. It will be arranged across four seasons under the themes of autonomous technology, decarbonisation, smart cities, and communities, each one focusing on new technologies and inventions.

The first six months of the exhibition will look at driverless transport and how this could support the transfer of passengers to and from railway stations. Developed with the Assuring Autonomy International Programme (AAIP), which ensures the safety of autonomous technology, it will feature a mock-up cab showing three screens of footage which simulate a driverless environment, while visitors will be able to use overlays to the footage that demonstrate how algorithms are used in autonomous driving technology.

Professor John McDermid, Director of the AAIP, said in the statement: “This exhibit with the National Railway Museum is a fantastic way to help the public understand how machine learning – an essential part of how an autonomous vehicle understands the world around it – works, and how the research we are doing can help them to trust that the system will work safely and as expected.”

The Autonomous Technology exhibit runs until December 2022. Details about the remaining three exhibits on decarbonisation, smart cities and communities will be released later this year.
