Tabuk – Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans for an octagonal floating port city as part of the Neom development. There are also plans to build a ski resort within the smart business and tourism development on the Red Sea coast.

Saudi Arabia plans to build “the world’s largest floating structure” as part of the Neom development, according to an article from the design platform Dezeen. The Oxagon port and logistics hub would be one of 10 regions within the Neom development in the northeast of Saudi Arabia.

As a port and logistics hub for the Neom project, Oxagon is designed to take advantage of shipping through the Suez Canal. The octagonal city will be partly on land, with a large section protruding into the Red Sea, and will be arranged around water-filled squares. It will also contain a cruise terminal and oceanographic research centre, writes Dezeen.

The Neom project has also unveiled plans for the first outdoor ski resort in the Gulf, according to a statement from Bechtel, the project management company contracted to manage the so-named Trojena. Located 50 kilometres off the Gulf of Aqaba coast, Trojena will span an area of 1,400 square kilometers with elevations rising to 2,600 metres. To make Trojena a year-round destination, the project will feature six development districts – Gateway, Discover, Valley, Explore, Relax and Fun. Construction work on the ski village is scheduled to begin this year.

Neom is designed as a renewable-energy-powered region that is part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy. It includes The Line, a 170-kilometre linear city. em
