Melbourne - The City of Melbourne has revealed the design ideas for its Greenline Project. With plans for tree-lined vistas, riverfront boardwalks and natural wetlands, the four-kilometre project is set to transform the Australian city. The designs must now be approved by the city council and community.

The City of Melbourne in the southeastern Australian state of Victoria has unveiled a suite of design ideas from the landscape architecture firms TCL and Aspect Studios for its city-shaping Greenline Project, according to an article from the Australian magazine Architecture and Design. The project will span four kilometres along the north bank of the Yarra River, with plans for “tree-lined vistas, riverfront boardwalks, event spaces, natural wetlands and cultural meeting places”.

The plans are spread across different areas. These include the Birrarung Marr Precinct, celebrating the contemporary Wurundjeri culture with seasonal events, and the Falls Precinct, with designs featuring a linear park and an ecological riverside with floating pontoons, as well as a new wetland habitat for local wildlife. The River Park Precinct is designed to include expanded open space, lawns and a neighbourhood nature play area, while the Maritime Precinct offers improved boating access and amenities, and the Saltwater Wharf Precinct features a park with plants, trees, and seating.

“The Greenline Project will revitalise the north bank of the Yarra River – creating thousands of jobs, attracting waves of new visitors, and injecting millions of dollars into our economy,” commented Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp in the article. “Our landscape architecture and design experts have crafted an incredible vision for what the Greenline Project could look like.”

The new designs are subject to approval from city councillors before a community consultation process. ce/em
