Berlin - The German capital city of Berlin has launched barrier-free access to public transport to mark the Special Olympics World Games 2023. The VBB easy app is designed to support people with cognitive impairments or mobility limitations, as well as to facilitate route planning across the city.

The public transport authority Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) has launched the VBB easy app for barrier-free access to bus and train services in Berlin and Brandenburg. The app was created by the technology company Hacon, which belongs to Siemens Mobility. It was launched to coincide with the Special Olympics World Games 2023, which are being held in the German capital city until 25 June.

VBB easy is an accessible routing app for people with cognitive impairments or mobility limitations and anyone who prefers "a simple app for planning routes by bus and train", according to Hacon in a statement. With easy language and an intuitive interface, it allows users to search for timetable information, taking barrier-free routes into account. During the journey, the app provides illustrated navigation and step-by-step information, as well as stored help contacts in case of an emergency. Video calls are also possible in conjunction with the newly launched VBB GuideMeGo app.

Ute Bonde, VBB Managing Director, commented in the statement: “With the two newly developed apps, we are reaching the next level in accessibility. Mobility is a basic right and a service of general interest.”

VBB easy is designed to be used beyond the Special Olympics World Games 2023, according to the statement. However, while the event is ongoing, the app can be used to navigate by searching for types of sport and event locations. The app's language can be set to German or English. ce/em
