Seoul - An industrial area in northeast Seoul is being transformed into a smart city. It will have residential towers of different heights, a street mall and a space containing cinemas and a community centre. The idea is to marry digital services with an environment that caters to everyone.

The Dutch architect UNStudio has designed a 500,000 square metre smart city geared to the digital economy that will transform an area of industrial land in northeast Seoul. The idea behind the so-called Project H1 is for residents to be able to reach work and leisure destinations within a 10-minute walk from their homes, according to an article published by Global Construction Review.

Project H1, which is being realised by Hyundai Development Company, will feature eight residential towers of different heights spaced along a street-mall. There will also be a so-called “third space” with cinemas, a community centre and a kindergarten.

Writing on its website, UN Studio explained that the goal is to marry a range of digital services with a physical environment that caters for any size of household. The project should be, the company writes, “a smart, healthy, green environment where contemporary working, living and entertainment are all combined in one neighbourhood”.

Ben van Berkel, UNstudio’s founder, added: “The components of the masterplan not only encourage the creation of strong community bonds, the proposed digital service packages also create an unprecedented level of convenience for the residents.”
