Macau – The Macau SAR 2020-2040 Urban Master Plan is coming into force on February 15, 2022. Covering about three square kilometres of land, it encourages people to work close to where they live and responds to future population, social and economic demands in Macau, on China’s southern coast.

The Macau SAR 2020-2040 Urban Master Plan will come into force on February 15, 2022, the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT) announced in a statement. Based on the Master Plan, the Macau SAR Government will draw up detailed plans for three kilometres of new land gained from the sea.

“The Master Plan Project foresees, in the long term, a new landfill as spaces for urban development and land reserve, to respond to future population growth and meeting future social and economic demands,” writes the DSSOPT.

The plan divides the city into residential, tourism, green leisure, industrial and diversified industries areas. Priority is given to habitation and public infrastructure, while the space reserved for tourism and casinos will be "less than the 18 per cent provided for ecological conservation areas".

According to the DSSOPT, the plan aims to create conditions that “encourage people to work in the areas where they live”. It is considered crucial for defining the city’s future urban construction and renewal, including land auctions for private housing.
