New York - C40 Cities is calling for innovative projects to stimulate low-carbon urban development. With the latest edition of its urban design competition, the global network is inviting creative multidisciplinary teams to compete to design and develop climate-friendly urban projects.

The global climate-friendly network of 97 city mayors, C40 Cities, has launched the third edition of Reinventing Cities. The urban design competition seeks to transform underused sites by inviting creative multidisciplinary teams of architects, developers and community groups, among others, to compete to design and develop climate-friendly projects. Twelve global cities will participate in the initiative in 2022, including Bologna, Bristol, Montréal, San Francisco and São Paulo. Applications are open until September.

The projects should “serve the needs of local communities and become sustainable city landmarks”, delivering energy efficiency and low carbon construction, according to an article on the online platform Smart Cities World. It continues that the participating cities will demonstrate how collaboration with the private sector can enable low carbon development and empower communities to live more sustainably. The winners will be announced in 2023.

“Cities are at the centre of more and more lives around the world, and it is vital that society and industry work together to reinvent how we live, work and play to reduce our impact on the planet,” commented Cindy Andersen, managing director of Ingka Centres, which is supporting the initiative alongside Stavros Niarchos Foundation and FedEx.
